What Steps Are Essential In Any DIY Home Project

Redecorating a room can be quite daunting, you really need to know what steps are essential in any home DIY project.  Once you know these steps and follow them, it really will make your project run a little smoother.

Whether you’re redoing the kitchen, your bedroom, or the living room, your going to invest time, money and probably a whole lot of emotion into the project. So you want to get it right and keep it fun.

Keep on reading this bite size guide before picking up a paintbrush or buying any cushions.  If you do this I promise you, nothing will be missed, your new furniture will fit and you will not have to return a thing!

Essential Step 1: Evaluate

Look at your room

Now, assess the room for a few factors: The total amount of space you have and how much extra space you’ll have if you get rid of some items. How much space you’ll need for new items and finally, whether the room is multi-functional or not.

This is an essential step to any DIY home project, because it’ll give you an idea of how much you can change in the room and what elements have to stay.
For example, if your lounge combines the living room and the dining room, you’ll need to assess beforehand how much space you want to give to each portion, etc.

Once you have all of this information, you will be able to quickly determine what pieces of furniture are going to fit and which are not. It will straight away eliminate some options, mainly due to size.

Trust me, you will be thankful of this natural elimination process, when your walking through beautifully designed showrooms.

Then and only then, create a rough plan of how the furniture will be placed, taking into account the dimensions of the room and furniture items.

Essential Step 2: Getting Rid of the Fat

Divide all of your existing items in the room into three piles.  keep, donate, or throw away.  When I say throw away, I actually mean donate to Oxfam or another charity. Even if the product is broken, you will be amazed what one persons rubbish is to another!

Now, give the rest of the room a good sort through. Clean out draws and bookcases, vacuum the upholstery and give the rug a good shake.  It is much better to do this now, before you start to fill the room up with new furniture. Then when you do start to add all of the new pieces in, it will really feel like a complete renovation, rather than just a new sofa, or a few new cushions.

Essential Step 3: Out With The Old

If you want to give your old furniture a makeover, now is the time.  Have a good look around, perhaps an old chair could be re-upholstered or a cheap bookcase re-painted. Whether you’re doing it yourself or sending it to be repainted professionally, decide your theme and colour choices beforehand.

This can get very overwhelming very quickly, so have a read of:

The blog will really help you narrow down your options.

Another great tip is to go through charity shops or vintage fairs to find unique items, this will take your room makeover to the next level.

 Essential Step 4: Getting Started

Once all the sorting and planning is done, you can finally tackle the room itself!

  1.  If any floorboards or tiles need to be fixed, take care of them first.
  2. Then move on to the walls- take your time if you’re painting them yourself to make sure there aren’t any patches or paint streaks.
  3. Once the paint has dried completely (drying times vary depending on the paint you use), you can start bringing your stuff back in.
  4. Hang your curtains (if any) and arrange the furniture according to your plan.

Now that you’ve done all the heavy lifting, it’s time for the fun stuff.

Hang up your frames and photos, put up wall shelves, and showpieces. Regardless of the theme, a houseplant or two will also spruce up the place.

Note from a Designer:

Although it can seem like a long process, especially if you originally thought it was going to be a quick job. It is 100% worth the extra time and effort. The last thing you want is a lack lustre result and a niggling feeling that it doesn't look quite right. Especially if it is a space that you will be in everyday!!!!

Slow down and take your time and follow the steps. Somebody once told me ''Preparation, prevents piss poor performance!'' It is how I approach all of my projects and although things do not always go to plan. The more prep I have done, the better I am equipped to limit the damage.

This blog is a quick bite size guide outlining the steps which are essential in any DIY home project. Follow them and it will get your project off to a great start.
